GENERAL MOTORS CUP AT SEAFAIR

SUNDAY:

1st Place, Dave Villwock
1st Place, Dave Villwock

The highly anticipated final heat match-up between Dave Villwock, in the Miss Budweiser, and Greg Hopp, driving the Miss PICO, didn't materialize after all. Villwock took the checkered flag, for his fifth win this season. Hopp took second, but only after the U16 Miss E-Lam Plus was disqualified for an N-2 violation after the heat was run and awards given.

This was a banner day for Villwock, who took first in two of three preliminary heats, and second in one. He broke the course speed record during qualifying, and was the first driver to win first place in the final after being restricted to lane two.  To add to his good fortune, his primary competition, Chip Hanauer, took the day off from driving, due to injuries incurred during last weekend's Tri-Cities, WA race. He did, however lose one heat to Hanauer's back up driver, Hopp. So he was relieved to see the end of the final and the checkered flag waving him in first.

"There were three boats that could have won today and we just happened to get it," said Villwock. "Hopp got a great start and won one heat. He got through there clean and did a great job. We had three good starts and one start that was bad. Sometimes it looks really easy when we click off boat wins. But you can see how tough it can get in the blink of an eye. How first can go to last."

It was simply a bad run of luck for Hopp from the start of the championship heat. First, he was denied his place in lane one by Mark Weber in the U10, York International Presents Pizza Time. Then, at the apex of the first turn of lap one, Hopp was the victim of a lane infraction committed by Dr. Ken Muscatel in the U14 The Tire Factory. Muscatel's encroachment into Hopp's lane, washed down the Miss PICO, and the boat briefly lost power.

HEAT 1 RESULTS:

Mark Weber led a rollicking parade for three laps. Mark Tate  pushed the U2 Freddie's Club but was unable to catch Weber and the U10 York International/Pizza Time.

"Basically that was a get your feet wet type of run," said Tate. "To learn the boat in racing water, what it likes, what it doesn't like."

Miss Budweiser driver Dave Villwock led Heat 1B of the General Motors Cup at Seafair from start to finish.  Although Villwock was the inside boat at the start UHRA officials ruled that Villwock had left lane one open.

"I didn't have too much room left  in there," said Villwock. "I parked in lane two and Evans came up along side of me. That was the race."

Villwock, who has scored final heat victories in the previous two races, is prohibited from occupying lane one in any heat including the final. According to UHRA officials Villwock left the required 25 feet between himself and the buoy line and therefore was not penalized.

Greg Hopp worked to keep his boat, the Miss PICO, within a roostertail of Villwock's Miss Budweiser. On lap two Hopp made a move for the inside lane but spray from Villwock's hydro slowed Hopp's progress. Hopp then turned his attention to holding off a hard charging Mark Evans in the Miss E-Lam Plus.

PIT NOTES:
Two rule modifications were announced at yesterday's Driver's meeting.  The penalty for violating the DMZ area of the racecourse has been increased from a $300 fine to a one lap penalty. The penalty for forcing into a lane has been increased from $500 to a one lap penalty. It was perceived that several teams were willing to pay the penalty in order to gain advantage on the racecourse. The new modifications to the penalty structure should stem this problem.

The definition of "on-plane" was also reinforced at yesterday's meeting. This was done to prevent drivers from parking in lane one before the start of a Heat. A boat on the racecourse that goes "off-plane" for more than 5 seconds will be given a black flag.

SATURDAY:

UNLIMITED QUALIFYING:

Chip Hanauer won't tie Bill Muncey's career record in his hometown this weekend. After coming within eight miles an hour of Dave Villwock's top qualifying speed, Hanauer made the difficult decision to not drive due to injuries incurred in a crash at Tri-Cities last weekend.

"We were having trouble getting torque out of the boat. We kept trying to get it fixed and every time I tried it I just kept doing more damage (to my back). So it got to the point that to keep the boat going straight, I had to let off the throttle, and I just couldn't hang on to it," said Hanauer.

Rookie Greg Hopp will step into the PICO cockpit tomorrow. Until this weekend, Hopp had driven for his family's Hopp Racing Team, led by his father Jerry Hopp. Today was his first time driving the PICO.

"I found out about ten minutes before I went out in the boat," said Greg Hopp. "Fred came down and said Chip's back was hurting and they were having some handling problems with their back up boat. Then he asked if I wanted to drive."

Hopp is optimistic about his chances to take the Seafair Cup tomorrow.

"The first time out it was pretty bad. We ended up switching rudders and that took care of about 80 percent of it. It's handling better and I think it's pretty raceable," he said.

Dave Villwock continues to lead in speed in the Miss Budweiser on this the second day of qualifying.  He leads the pack with a speed of 163.451 mph, breaking the existing course record of 162.543 mph. Hanauer in the Miss Budweiser set that record in 1995.

UNLIMTED LIGHTS RACING:
In Unlimited Lights competition, Randy Haas in the Wizards Casino/CompAir took the checkered flag in this weekend's final. Haas battled with Graham Trucking presents Pocket Mechanic driver Phil Bononcini, but it was determined that Bononcini had jumped the start.

This is a long overdue win for Haas, who has been in a dry spell for more than three years.

"We keep tearing stuff up," said Haas. "I tore the canard off of it, I tore the cowling off of it, and I tore the wings off of it. It's been a hard road to go, but everybody keeps pitching in and working. We've finally done it."

UL FINAL:

* One minute penalty

UNLIMTED LIGHT HEATS 2A and 2B:

Heat 2A featured Bo Schide and  the UL16 ALAMO on the ragged edge as he passed Phil Bononcini on the front stretch of lap number two.

"The water's a bit rough out there and I gave it a bit too much wing," said Schide. "It was a little light reacting so it got high until I got the boat down.  I'm trying to get as good a ride as I can and still maintain speed. Once in awhile the boat does get a little more air under it. But that's the fastest way around the course."

Schide went on to win. Bononcini was second and Dave Bender was third.

Charley Wiggins got the inside lane on Randy Haas in Heat 2B and that proved to be just enough advantage to win. Haas kept his boat within a roostertail of Wiggins for all three laps and finished second.

Wiggins is locked in a national high points battle with Bo Schide. The outcome of this weekend's racing may well determine if Wiggins'  Freddie's Club team travels North to Kelowna.

"We still haven't booked any flights home. We're just kind of holding our breath," said Wiggins.  "We did lose a hundred points to ALAMO this morning in the first heat. The national points are important, the race wins are what we really want.  We didn't enter this year thinking we could win the championship. We just wanted to win a few races. It's turned out better than we expected. Our focus is still on winning races."

UNLIMTED LIGHT HEATS 1A and 1B:

Phil Bononcini ran well as his competitors faltered one by one. Randy Haas challenged for one lap before going dead in the water at the entrance of  turn one. Dave Bender kept it together and finished a distant second.

"I kind of thought that was going to be an easy one," said Bononcini. "We tried a couple of different carburetors yesterday and found one we think we like. It's going to go pretty good this weekend."

Charley Wiggins and Bo Schide ran like they were glued together until Wiggins hooked at the apex of turn one. Schide went on to win the heat in the UL16 ALAMO. Wiggins, after quick spin through the infield,  was able to finish second. Jerry Hopp was third.

FRIDAY:

Dave Villwock in the Miss Budweiser leads the pack in qualifying at the General Motors Cup at Seafair in Seattle, WA. His time is more than ten mph faster than his nearest competitor Mark Evans in the Miss E-Lam Plus.

Chip Hanauer, driver of the Miss Pico, returns after a spectacular crash last weekend in Tri-Cities, WA. Hanauer suffered a serious case of whiplash that threatened to keep him on the sidelines for the Seafair event. He is currently holds third place in qualifying with a speed of 148.432. He hopes to tie Bill Muncey's career record for wins this weekend on his home water. In attendance is Muncey's former wife, Fran, who has been pushing Hanauer to return to racing and go for the position of most winningest driver in Unlimited Hydroplane history.

Rejoining the Unlimited circuit this weekend is Mark Tate, former driver for Steve Woomer's Close Call Phone Card Team. Tate has not climbed into the cockpit of an Unlimited since last year's APBA Gold Cup, when he drove the U-99.

This is a sort of homecoming for Tate. His first job as an Unlimited driver was for Jim Harvey's Oh Boy O'berto team in 1990, when he won rookie of the year.  Nearly a decade later, he returns to drive for Harvey's Freddie's Club team.

"Jim gave me a call and we discussed some of his situation with Steve (David). Steve felt that he wanted to step down earlier than what he'd hoped and he thought it was better for the team. So within a couple more phone calls and a couple of hours later, here I am back in Seattle," said Tate.

Also returning to Unlimited driving is Brian Reynolds, who will  qualify  the U8 LLumar Window Film boat this weekend. Regular driver Nate Brown is in Vancouver, B.C. watching his son race his quarter midget car. Brown will be back in the cockpit for Sunday's racing.

Reynolds has driven for U8 owner Bill Wurster in the past but, he is best known for his successful career as a GNH and Unlimited Light pilot.

GENERAL MOTORS CUP AT SEAFAIR
Since the early 1950's unlimited hydroplanes have become synonymous with the Pacific Northwest. Therefore, it is only fitting that the General Motors Cup be associated with SEAFAIR, one of the largest festivals in the Northwest. For the past 49 years, SEAFAIR has been a part of some of the best hydroplane races in history. For many SEAFAIR goers, the term, "hydroplane" evokes images of roaring water crafts barely skimming the surface of the water as they tear around the course leaving only their signature "rooster-tails" in their wake.

Today, the image may be the same but Unlimited hydroplanes are the fastest raceboats in the world. These turbine engined crafts can travel at speeds of 200 mph on a race course only 2.5 miles in length!

Once again, the General Motors Cup at SEAFAIR race course will be positioned as close as 500 feet off-shore promising a thrilling water-spraying view of these spectacular "flying boats".

New this year in honor of SEAFAIR's 50th anniversary is the PEMCO Vintage Hydro Heat. Among those scheduled to participate are the Slo-mo-shun V, the Miss Thriftway and the Miss Burien.
