Lou Fageol, three-time winter of the Gold Cup hydroplane trophy, died of a heart ailment in a San Diego, California hospital January 17 [1961]. Fageol had retired from the hydro racing circuit when he was seriously injured during the 1955 Gold Cup trials. Piloting Slo-Mo-Shun V around the Lake Washington course, Fageol narrowly escaped death when the boat flipped, became airborne momentarily and crashed back down. During the course of his career, which began in 1928, Fageol had won the Harmsworth Trophy and President’s Cup as well as the Gold Cup.
